Saturday ‘A’ Road Ride – 3rd December 2016

Hi All, This week we will skirt the edge of the moor and hopefully then find the slightly more sheltered roads and so away from the forecasted cold easterly winds. Even so best wrap up me thinks! Route we will take is:- Leigham – Little Down – Green Lane – Crapstone – Dousland  – Walkhampton – Horrabridge – Moreshop – Batterbridge – Tavistock (Coffee and Cake at Bobs Eastend Café) – Drakes Trail to Yelverton – Home. This route is just under 40 miles I recall. Looking forward to riding with those who are not going Christmas shopping yet!

Leisure Road Ride – Saturday 26th November

This week we will return to the other of my preferred Leisure Ride routes on the basis that it is has every type of terrain imaginable, keeps to this rides principles of distance and is all in a particularly beautiful part of Plymouths close by outskirts!  To boot even this late in the year there seems to be plenty of autumn colours to add to the day! Another bonus is that with this route we are usually home around 1pm so you will have the pm to wash your bike and then go Christmas shopping :)! Route is:- Plym Valley Cycle Path to Yelverton – Crapstone … Read more…

End of BST Leisure Road Ride – Saturday 29th October

Well Winter close by but meanwhile we are having a super coloured Autumn so thought a trip to Lopwell Dam a good choice for this week.  Plenty of wildlife fattening up in the estuary and the trees a mass of reds, oranges and gold.  What a sight to behold and certainly not to be missed! So route is:- Plym Valley Cycle Path to Yelverton – Crapstone – Buckland Monochorum – Milton Coombe – Lopwell Dam (coffee and cake here at the Old Pump House) – Tamerton Foliot – Looseleigh Lane – Derriford Roundabout – Home. Circa 30 miles As a … Read more…

Mountain Bike Ride for Roadies and Even MTBers! – Saturday 1st October

Having chatted to a few of you at the AGM it seemed there is a bit of an appetite for another one of our occasional Saturday ‘Depart from YOGi HQ MTB rides’. So this will be another ride led by Ian and me both of us also having that urge to do some MTBing again.  We expect the trails are pretty dry err…………despite the last 24 hrs so seems a waste not to enjoy them before they once again become a winter mud fest. It’s also an opportunity for those of us who are riding next weeks Tour De Moor an opportunity to hone … Read more…

YOGi AGM and Saturday Rides – 10th September

Hi Everyone, A little later than traditional (to avoid the holiday season really!) it’s YOGi AGM time. And the confirmation of another year of our existence as an affiliated club, our 6th in fact. Once again the venue is St Paul’s Church Hall in Yelverton. All rides will start and end in the gravel car park by the village hall. If you arrive by car we advise parking on Yelverton Old Airfield (across the A386).  Anyone who rides and wants to bring some spare clothes will find plenty of car space in which to leave their bags (at own risk I might add!). … Read more…

Tour of Britain – Social Road Ride to Haytor – Friday 9th September

Hi All, Great that the Tour of Britain organisers have reinstated the best stage of them all after three year’s absence (okay we are biased!).   So hope you have booked a days leave as on Friday 9th September the TOB hits South Devon and time for us to enjoy a ride out to the finish at Haytor.   This is also a great opportunity to invite any non local cycling mates to come to the South West and join us for the day. We will meet at usual YOGI HQ (Coypool) at 9:30 on Friday morning and ride up the Plym … Read more…

Road Rides Cancelled – Saturday 20th August

Hi All, Nuts as it is and def’a first for August, we are cancelling the Leisure, A, B and C rides planned for tomorrow on account of a crazily early Autumn storm.  Predicted winds of up to 60 mph right on ride time. Of course if you want to ride regardless just turn up and see who else is there, even post you in comments below so others can join you.  Be aware thought it will not be an official club ride, hence our insurance cover will not be valid. Other options are to either organise an impromptu MTB/Cyclo Cross/Gravel/Adventure (take your … Read more…

Off Road Ride for Roadies and MTBers – Saturday 23rd July

Hi Everyone, Ian and me had the thought its about time we had another light hearted off road Saturday ride option and as a number of us now own Gravel/Adventure/Cross Bikes thought we would pick a route that is suitable for those and MTB’s.  This is not a intended to be a full on thrash day more suitable to pretty much anyone who has some off road riding experience.  The MTBers will be setting the pace not the faster Gravel/Cross riders 🙂 Yes expect tricky bits otherwise its not worth calling it an off road ride 🙂 and especially for those not on MTB’s you … Read more…

Saturday ‘C’ Road Ride – 11th June

Bit of a dual effort by Ian and me to think of a suitably longish and a bit of a different ride for a nice June day, then realised it was going to be well…….. possibly iffy with westerlies.  So always looking for tailwinds home and following a suggestion from Tim (Halloran) we are heading in to Cornwall.  Likely just in time to enjoy those lovely roads before the holiday making hoards take over the roads. Route is:- Crownhill (via Eggbuckland) – SDaltash Bridge (meet there at 09:30 is if you want) – Carkeel – Hatt – Callington -Congdons Shop – Upton … Read more…

Basic Fixes and Safety Checks Evening – ELM Centre, Estover Friday 3rd June

Hi All, Ian, John Allan and yours truly are running another one of our popular basic fixes evening.  This is for our members who dread the road/off road puncture and/or are not sure how to ensure their bike is in tune. This will be held on Friday 3rd June 6:30 – 8:30 at the ELM Centre, Nr Asda Estover. As well as practising an inner tube change (a number of times!) you will also learn how to complete the ‘M’ check (we will demo this). How to tune up gears, brakes (sorry not Hydro’s on this occasion), headset adjustment etc. All we … Read more…

Saturday ‘C’ Road Ride – 14th May

It seems ages ago since I led a ‘C’ ride (that’s cos it was!), so be aware I might be leading from the rear :). Whatever we will be heading up to the moor and to ensure a nice easy warm up we will start with an amble up the Plym Valley.  Here take the opportunity to ‘Tree Peep’ and enjoy the lush translucent green leaves before the insects and fungi start their feasting and spoil the pristine look :).  Yep that also means those who want an easy(ier) life can meet us at Yelverton for a 10 am depart. Actual route will be:- Plym Valley Cycle … Read more…

Group Road Riding Training – Dates TBC

Hi Everyone, Following all sorts of useful discussions at our April members evening we agreed a few actions. This is a communication about one of them! Others to follow…………. Firstly we are a popular club with a membership level that makes us one of the bigger UK clubs, something we are rightly proud of, but we are very conspicuous around the area. That means after the most important consideration of safety we must be seen by all other road users and as individuals by each other in the best possible light. Yes we have had the occasional incident that has … Read more…

Leisure Ride – Saturday 9th April

Hi All, It’s my pleasure to lead this week and as this group stayed in Devon last time out we we will head to Cornwall, generally a favourite short ride of many of us. A ‘Heads Up’ (or a reminder to some) it is hilly but they will all be ridden at a pace that makes them all fun and anyway the ups always rewarded by the downs. Route is:- Cattedown – Barbican – West Hoe – Millbay – Torpoint Ferry – St John – Millbrook – Maker – Cawsand – Whitsand Bay (cafe stop at the Cliff Top Cafe) – Tregantle – Anthony – … Read more…
