We have been asked to advertise this event, which of course we are delighted to do, especially as it is also aimed at family participation.
It would be good to see YOGi Cycling represented and a two up time trial perhaps a good way for a first attempt at any competitive cycling, there’s nothing more rewarding than being physically sick in tandem!!! Well apart from watching others doing it that is!

The second annual Navy Cycling Annual Festival will take place at RNAS Merryfield, ILTON, Somerset (approximately 20 minutes from RNAS Yeovilton) on Sun 14 Apr 13, commencing at 0830 with the first event, the Individual Prologue Time Trial. The event organiser is WO1 Sean Childs (HMS NEPTUNE) and he will be assisted by various volunteers from within the association. It is important to remember that this event is inclusive to all abilities; from the complete beginner up to the regular competitor. There is something for everyone and all attendees will be made to feel welcome. Family members including children are encouraged to attend, and activities are available to keep them amused throughout the day, including a junior race for 5 yr old upwards and a bouncy castle.
Competitors are requested to complete the Entry Form at Annex A and return it to the Event Organiser, so that it is received by Fri 5 Apr 13 at the latest. The event is open to service personnel, affiliated civilians members, and invited guest from civilian local clubs. Cost of entry is £10.00 for current RNRMCA members and £15.00 for non-members/guests/other services. The membership database will be checked to clarify membership status. Cheques are to be made payable to the ‘RNRMCA.’ Entries are restricted to a maximum of 120 riders, and it is perceived that this year it may be met, so all personnel are quested to apply soonest to avoid disappointment. A reservation is only guaranteed with a cheque and application form. Ensure you identify and nominate your partner for the team events. Entry fee also includes BBQ for competitors and their families.
The main events will take place on a traffic free 3.1 mile airfield circuit.
0730 Registration Opens
0830 Individual 3 Mile TT Prologue commences (30 sec intervals)
0930 3 Mile timed events for 5-12 year olds (5-9 yrs to be accompanied by an adult)
1030 Navy Cup – 2 Up 21 Mile Team TT; first team commences (2 min intervals)
1230 BBQ commences
1400 Devil Individual ‘B’ Road Race
1500 Devil Individual ‘A’ Road Race
All rules will be available for all to read at the Registration, and a brief will take place at the start of the Devil and HPR races. It is compulsory for all participating riders to wear approved hard shell helmets for all events. Tri-bars and Tri-Spokes/Carbon 4 bladed/Disc type wheels are only permitted for the Individual Prologue and Navy Cup TTT, and no drafting is permitted. Deep rim spokes wheels up to 100mm are allowed for the Devil and HPR Races, where drafting is permitted. Drafting or pacing is not permitted in the Prologue or 2 Up TTT (unless between paired riders of that particular event). For Junior riders 5-9 year olds, they are to be accompanied by a supervising adult when participating in their 3 Mile timed event.
From the West on the A303, at the Ilminster roundabout (first Roundabout after Honiton) take second left on A358 towards Taunton continue along for short distance and then take the right turn to Ilton. Follow signs to Ilton, watching out for a sharp left to village. Continue through village until barrier and entrance to Merryfield can be seen. From the East Turn Right (4th Exit) to Taunton A358 at the Ilminster Roundabout at the end of Ilminster bypass, then pick up signs as above.
Toilets (including an additional Portaloo) and limited changing facilities are available throughout. Showering facilities will not be available.
Signing on and race number collection will take place at the Registration. Your number is to be kept and used for all races. All riders are required to sign on before racing, and return numbers on completion.
Qualified officials will be in attendance for all events.
Approximately £1000 will be allocated towards prizes and trophies. A full prize list will be
confirmed and advertised on receipt of all entries.
Hot/Cold refreshments will be provided throughout the day at a very small charge which will go towards various charities. The BBQ for competitors and their families has been subsidised by the association. Please ensure you bring adequate fresh water and additional food with you.
As this event incorporates the Navy Cup, service personnel will therefore be representing their unit, and as such are requested to arrange travel arrangements via their PT Staff and MT Section. A signal will not be released in advance to confirm attendees.
The RNRMCA will be contributing approximately £1500 to assist with the delivery of this event, so please support it. Every participant over the age of 16 has the opportunity to participate in four separate races throughout the day.
Riders will be seeded for all events, including Devils A & B races and the HPR race, so it is important that all relevant information is included on the Entry Form. The Start Sheet will be released and distributed on Mon 9 Apr 13.
