”We want the finest wines available to humanity. We want them here and we want them now!”
If you know of a good cake stop that we’ve missed off, please comment at the bottom of this page. Those below and lots more that we use are all on a map here to help plan routes via the best cake and coffee.
The Avon Mill – Loddiswell (01548 550338)
Very good food and reasonably priced considering how much you get for your money. The one snag is that you might not be able to get back up the hill after over-indulging! It is a small garden centre but don’t be put off by that as the café is in the old mill.
The Beachcomber Café – Bovisand, Plymouth (01752 862679)
Situated on the private road that runs along the front of the holiday chalets. Fine views out to sea.
The Grange Restaurant, Buckfast Abbey – Buckfastleigh (01364 645504)
Large cafeteria with a good selection of wholesome meals and cakes too.
Captain Jasper’s – Barbican, Plymouth (01752 262444)
Good choice of baguette and bap based food plus large mugs of tea. Alfresco seating only.
Formerly called the Green Café when it was a tiny little shed that seated 20. Has now morphed into an impressive establishment and is very popular with locals and hence usually very busy. Good food, and has some outside seating.
Jennycliff Café – Jennycliff, Plymouth (01752 402358)
Basic, fine if you like chips, not much in the way of cakes – you get the picture! Good position, nice if you can sit outside.
Riverford Farm Shop, Yealmpton (01752 880925)
Inside and outside seating. Nice selection of food. If you’re a small group they’ll allow you to wheel your bikes through to the patio area. A bit close to Plymouth but good for a short social ride.
Cliff Top Café, near Freathy, Cornwall (01752 822069)
Much better alternative to ‘The View’. Again the panorama is great, on a good day you’ll have paragliders sailing over your head. Open all day, all year pretty much.
Seaton Beach Café – Seaton, Cornwall (01503 250621)
Café on the beach with lots of additional outside seating. Not the greatest beach but the café’s okay.
Foxtor Café – Princetown (01822 890238)
Very good. Plenty of seating outside and in, and they don’t mind muddy mountain bikers neither.
Tea shop city – take your pick. Very busy in Summer.
Cream teas are usually available in the church hall during the Summer (check on their website). A more relaxed alternative to the coach party that is Widdecombe.
Venus Café – Blackpool Sands, Dartmouth (01803 770209)
Quite expensive but then just look at the location!
White Hart Hotel – Mortonhampstead (01647 441340)
Plenty of seating, well enough for 30 YOGi’s if you sit outside. Bob’s a chirpy chap who’s eyes light up on our approach!
Wrangaton Bakery, Wrangaton Business Park (01364 73060)
Sells the biggest teacakes I have seen!
The Dartmoor Lodge Hotel, Ashburton (01364 652232)
Waterfall Tea Rooms, Lydford Gorge (01822 820320)
The Tea Room on the Green, Newton Ferrers (01752 873368)
Very posh and very nice (proper china and no tea bags!). Only good for small groups.
The Old School Tea House, Mothecombe
The P.I.E. Stop Cafe – Launceston (01566 – 779650)
The Lakeside Cafe, Roadford Lake Country Park (01566 784859)
