There is a tale told by the YOGi elders of a hill climb in a land far, far away, somewhere between here and middle earth, in a place that is known only as Widecombe in the Moor. This hill is said to be as steep as the road from hell and as long as time itself. The question you must ask yourself is ‘Are you ready for it??’
Wow, tripped out for a bit there, Widecombe’s not that bad actually. The ride will start from our usual meeting point at B&Q car park, Plympton (09:00am). We will head out along the cycle track for that social warm up, making our way to Yelverton to pick up anyone wishing to join us there (09:35ish). Next it’s on through Princetown and a chance for anyone wanting a shorter ride to head off. For the rest of us it’s out to just past Postbridge where we will turn right and head for Widecombe in the Moor. Our café stop will be in the village itself and here we can plan our hill climb over coffee and teacakes whilst our legs cool down. Who wants to climb on warm legs anyhow – it’s just not the YOGi way. After the climb we will descend Peartree into Ashburton, a long fast decent that will make the Widecombe climb seem worthwhile. Heading home we will come back through South Brent and Ivybridge, along the number 27 national cycle route back to Plymouth. Distance – 55 miles.
