This week’s ride is a jaunt around South Dartmoor and the South Hams. Distance about 52 miles, total ascent 1400m. There are a couple bits I don’t think we have done before. The first half is mainly back lanes and the second half a bit faster and more rolling. The cafe stop is towards the end of the ride (40miles) at the Swan Inn so if you want to treat yourself with a fine pint of ale, then you can as only 12 miles left. I will be! The route is as follows:
B&Q to Sparkwell, we turn right as you enter and ride through Venton to Cornwood. Then to Ivybridge via Dinnaton and on to Wrangaton. Here we take a National Cycle Route through Cheston and Owely to South Brent. Then on to Shipley Bridge near Avon Dam and back around Brent Hill where we pick up the B3372 back into South Brent. It’s a left turn at the Pol Stn and over the A38 to Avonwick. Then it’s the regular blast past Ugborough and Ermington. Those that need to get back can continue on the Yealmpton road. For the rest of us we turn left towards Mothecombe and the coast road to Noss Mayo. Cafe stop at the Swan Inn (Mine’s a pint of ale if you’re offering) then home via Yealmpton, Elburton and Laira bridge.
Caution in 3 places please:
- Enter Sparkwell slowly as we turn right immediately as you turn the first corner.
- South Brent to Avonwick is a nice back lane downhill but cars likely as using it as a rat run while the main route is closed.
- Coast road to Noss Mayo mud on the road between farm fields towards the end.
Hope to see you there, John Ambrose
